MASTERING THE ART OF COFFEE TABLE STYLING
Coffee Table Styling
When it comes to interior design, coffee tables really are the perfect blend of function and style. They’re that finishing touch in a living room that can tie everything together. Think of them almost like an art display. Whether you lean towards a minimalist setup or love to layer, a thoughtfully styled coffee table adds personality to the space. It’s where you can show off those vintage finds, stack your favorite books, and create a look that feels laid back but still curated.
In this post, I’ll share some of my favorite styling tricks that make coffee table displays feel personal and intentional. Each one is simple to pull off and can make a big difference in how your room feels.
Establish a Focal Point
I like to create a focal point for every coffee table I style—something that catches the eye and ties everything together. This could be anything from a vintage brass candlestick to a unique sculptural vase or even an heirloom tray with a bit of history. The key is choosing a piece that fits the scale of your table and complements the other pieces around it.
I also love adding something with height, like a travertine obelisk (like the one in the image above) or a vase filled with sculptural branches. That vertical element brings dimension to the display and adds a little extra personality to the arrangement.
Layer with Books for Height, Texture and Colour
Books are such a key part of coffee table styling, adding both height and texture. I love choosing books that I actually enjoy, but I’m also fond of having covers that look great on display. Sometimes a good coffee table book is just what you need to bring some color to your space. They’re also an easy way to change up your decor without making a big commitment.
I usually prefer stacking books in odd numbers, like a set of three. They provide a solid base for smaller decor pieces and help anchor the whole look. I also like leaving them open to a favorite image or photograph, Change it up depending on your mood!
Go for Texture
The mix of vintage brass, smooth stone, and wood can add so much depth to your space. Try playing with different textures—a polished stone piece next to something more organic, like a wooden bowl or tray, creates that perfect contrast. It keeps things feeling grounded but still sophisticated. This is where your vintage finds come in—something with a worn texture or a unique story behind it. Think outside the big box stores for these pieces; sometimes the best finds are the ones that carry a bit of history.
Decorative Boxes
I also love using decorative boxes as storage to keep things functional and aesthetic at the same time! They’re perfect for hiding remotes, chargers, or any other bits and pieces that don’t belong on display. Whether it’s a woven basket or a sleek lacquered box, it’s an easy way to keep your coffee table looking polished and hides those pesky remotes!
Add Layers
To add more depth, try layering items. For instance, place a smaller decorative item on top of a stack of books or layer a tray with objects of different heights. This approach gives your table a curated look without cluttering it up.
